FILM CULTURE

Cinema culture is like cider to Frankfurt. The city has a vibrant film culture, which unfolds on all levels: German Filminstitut – DIF founded in 1949, is the oldest film scientific institute of the Federal Republic. filmportal.de, the flagship of the DIF is the central internet platform for comprehensive, reliable and free information on all German movies, from the beginning until today. DIF is as well responsible for the European counterpart, EFG – The European Film Gateway, with around 600,000 movies, stills, film posters and text material from 30 countries.

German Film Museum, which is not only a jewel on the Frankfurt banks, but with its cinema and exhibition market counts to the important cultural institutions nationwide.

The Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Studies at the Goethe University deals with the fields of research and teaching history, theory and aesthetics for film and media presentation forms, their institutional and social prerequisites and effective conditions.

 

Cinema Culture
Besides the well-known German multiplex cinema chains in which current blockbusters are shown, there are especially the art house cinemas in the city that guarantee diverse, varied and challenging programs. Here, especially documentary films, small and big German, European and international films find their way to the big screen, and thus to their audience. Taking the four municipal screens, the cinema at the German Film Museum is considered No. 1 of Germany. In 2012 it celebrated its 30th anniversary. The umbrella organization for municipal, student and free non-commercial cinema and film-cultural initiatives in Germany, der Federal Association of Communal Film Work (BkF) has its headquarters in Frankfurt. In addition to their regular screenings, all cinemas of the city invite to film events, festivals or premieres.

The film magazine epd Film published by Evangelischer Pressedienst/ Evangelical Press Service- situated in Frankfurt, informs German moviegoers and film fans, filmmakers and producers, as well as cinema owners and distributors of the latest movie reviews, news of festivals and the film industry.
