A Farewell to Fools” a Rumanian-German-Belgian Co-production starts in Rumania on March 15, starring Gérard Depardieu, Harvey Keitel and Laura Morante. The movie is directed by Romanian Bogdan Dreyer and produced by Giuliano Doman through Family Film in coproduction with the German company Daniel Zuta Filmproduktion (Frankfurt) and the Belgian company Minds Meet. Shot entirely in Romania, it was an expensive production with a budget of 3 million Euros.
Based on a novella by Romanian writer Titus Popovici, the film is set in a small Transylvanian village during World War II. When a German soldier is killed, the Germans threaten to shoot ten villagers if the small community does not turn in the killer. Promising him legendary funerals, the villagers try to convince Ipu (Gérard Depardieu), the village fool, to turn himself in, but their plan is not easy to accomplish with such an uncontrollable hero.
